Trichoderma has been used as a plant immune-boosting agent in organic farming for decades. Now the beneficial fungus is also conquering domestic gardens and balconies as part of the Avengelus range available in granule & gel form. Due to increasingly hot and dry summers, perennial outdoor plants are in high demand for gardens and balconies. In order for plants to develop strongly and healthily, early plant immune boosting is required. This can be compared with a healthy human lifestyle; if the plant is well cared for and surrounded by beneficial insects and microorganisms, it will not only thrive better, but can also better protect itself against attacks from pests and diseases. Giving plants a piece of nature back... Plant immune boosting begins with diversity in the soil. For the plant, a better microbial balance and nutrient availability in the soil results in less susceptibility to stress in the form of heat and pests. The diversity of soil life is very developed and connected in unspoilt nature. Plants in artificially created habitats, such as over-cultivated gardens or arboreta, have by comparison, disadvantages. Depending on the environmental impact, plants growing in over-cultivated areas show symptoms of damage and ill health. In order to compensate for the environmental impact of over-cultivation, natural plant immune boosting agents and beneficial organisms are recommended. Supporting the plant's immune system... The effect of Trichoderma harzianum over time is particularly noticeable in perennial plants. Trichoderma harzianum is a beneficial fungus that enters into a symbiotic relationship with the plant. It grows between the first two cell layers of the host root and stimulates the production of messenger substances such as salicylic acid. Salicylic acid derivatives, for example, attract pollinating insects and play a central role in plant immune functioning by combating pathogens. The formation of jasmonic acid is also stimulated; through interaction with salicylic acid, jasmonic acid is also of great importance in plant defence reactions against pests and diseases. The formation of phytoalexins (inducible plant defences similar to antibodies) are activated throughout the entire plant plant body. The activation of phytoalexins limits pathogen infestation and can lead to immunity against repeated infestation of the pathogen. Growth boosters and drought stress reduction... Trichoderma harzianum also produces growth hormones, so-called auxins. An important auxin is indole-3 acetic acid, which is synthesised in all plants. This has a stimulating effect on the growth of plants, especially their roots, even in the smallest quantities. These auxins are passed from Trichoderma to the plant. In dry periods, the plant benefits from a dense rootstock, which also serves as a water reservoir. In this way, Trichoderma harzianum prevents drought stress. Improved nutrient absorption... The nutrients present in the soil become more available when Trichoderma harzianum is present. Organic acids secreted by Trichoderma harzianum, locally reduce the pH value and increase the solubility of phosphates, potassium and micronutrients. This improved nutrient supply results in increased plant vitality. The latter is true especially during the flowering phase, when plants need phosphorus. If the roots can better absorb phosphorus, more pleasure can be gained from the improved and longer lasting flowering periods. Plants flower for longer, more intensively and more frequently with continuous use of Trichoderma harzianum. Symbiosis with other beneficial insects and humus formation... Many other soil beneficial organisms, such as mycorrhiza, are well tolerated by Trichoderma harzianum, e.g. nodule formation by nitrogen fixing bacteria. Trichoderma harzianum also breaks down organic substances, releases minerals and promotes the formation of humus. Maintaining a stable soil population... In principle, the following applies to Trichoderma harzianum: It is better to use several smaller quantities often than large quantities at once. This achieves the goal of evenly colonising the roots over a longer period of time and maintaining a stable population in the soil. Trichoderma harzianum initially builds up large populations in the natural environment, but the population can shrink again due to unfavourable environmental conditions such as drought. In addition, if several species of microorganisms settle on the root surface, the Trichoderma harzianum ratio changes over time. Thus, an initially strong culture can weaken with time. For these reasons, multiple applications are recommended.
