ExtraHelp from Burgon & Ball: a helping hand for every gardener

This season Burgon & Ball is introducing ‘ExtraHelp’, a collection of RHS-endorsed cutting tools packed with features to make cutting easier. The range has been developed to support gardeners with limited hand mobility or strength - but these tools are also ideal for every gardener who just wishes cutting could be a bit easier.

The ExtraHelp range is the latest evolution in Burgon & Ball’s RHS-endorsed cutting ranges. Previous updates introduced colour-coded packaging and handles for easy range navigation; exposed handles to encourage shopper trial; and a reduction in packaging plastic of over 50 per cent.

The launch of the ExtraHelp range offers retailers an outstanding opportunity in a growing category. The research which inspired the development of the range focused on an aging population; the high proportion of people living with arthritis and other musculoskeletal issues; and the natural variation in strength of different gardeners. A high proportion of gardeners face challenges in one or more of these areas - and ExtraHelp is the cutting tool solution that shoppers are looking for.

Of course, these tools aren’t exclusively for gardeners experiencing difficulties with gardening tasks – they’re for everybody! Making cutting less taxing on joints and tendons is a positive choice for every gardener, minimising aches and pains at the end of a day in the garden.

The range has been designed with two key areas of difficulty in mind. An ergonomic approach considers how the tool and the hand work together over time. These tools have been designed to work in harmony with the hand. In addition, specific tools in the range also support particular biomechanical problems, where conventional cutting tools can cause issues.

In a thoughtful touch, the handles are coloured in a conspicuous bright yellow, making the tools easy to find in any foliage and especially useful for gardeners with vision impairment.

What’s in the range?

The ExtraHelp range includes a bypass secateur and a compact bypass secateur. The clever design of these two tools features a downward-angled cutting head, giving a more natural cutting angle with a straight wrist. A slight inward bend also allows for a more natural hand position. The wide aluminium handles have soft rubber inserts for light weight and easy grip. A simple squeeze lock makes the tools easy to use.

Next, a compound action bypass secateur uses a compound lever design to boost cutting power. Similar to the compound lever action used in the most powerful loppers, the clever linked blade design amplifies power with no additional effort from the user. Everyday cutting is easier, and larger cuts up to 2cm in diameter can be tackled.  A non-stick coated blade gives smooth cutting performance. The lightweight aluminium handles have soft gel handles for an easy grip.

Completing the lineup, Burgon & Ball’s existing top-selling Ergo Deadheader and the powerful ratchet secateur get a makeover with eye-catching yellow handles to join this exciting new ExtraHelp range of tools for easier cutting.
