Malus ‘Julia’™

Malus ‘Julia’ combines the very best garden features of a classic crab apple with several additional and special characteristics. Scented, pink opening to white apple blossom is followed by persistent bright red, cherry-like fruit with very attractive extended pink/red stalks. The heavy fruit load is something to behold in autumn. The tree is of medium vigour, suitable for all locations and has good resistance to scab. The fruit will attract a multitude of birds in the cold weather and are also useful for culinary use and for making excellent jelly. 

Origin:M. ‘Julia’ has been named after Julia Trevelyan Oman CBE (Lady Strong) who with her husband Sir Roy Strong created The Laskett Garden  in Herefordshire, one of the largest post war formal gardens. Julia was a great friend of Frank P Matthews not least for her mutual love of crab apples of which she had an extensive collection. She died in October 2003 after a short illness with ovarian cancer. Each tree sold will contribute to Cancer Research.

Malus (Crab Apple) Growing Tips: Crab Apples are self-fertile, and very useful as pollinators for a variety of fruit trees. Full sun or part shade lover, best grown in fertile, moist, deep, loamy soils. Requires minimal pruning in late winter or spring to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
