High in Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Arhuaco community of Nabusimake grow a washed Typica that carries the character of the mountains it comes from. This is Indigenous coffee in the truest sense, grown, harvested, and cared for by over 60 Arhuaco families, each tending just half a hectare of mountainside.
Behind it is Oliverio, a descendant of the Arhuaco Mamos, the community's spiritual leaders. He studied International Trade in Bogotá and brought that education home, founding the Zey Zey Foundation to help Indigenous families trade fairly. His philosophy is simple: if you respect Mother Earth, you are protecting yourself.
That respect runs through everything. The Arhuaco reject synthetic chemicals entirely, feeding the soil with organic compost, aligning their harvests with the lunar cycles, and intercropping coffee with plantains, beans, and maize.
